UF Health College Distinctions

COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

David E. Winchester, M.D., an assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, has been selected as a member of CARDIOLOGY TODAY’s Next Gen Innovators — a group of early career cardiologists who the publication has identified as the next generation of cardiologists whom are working to educate their colleagues, conduct research on new and novel strategies to advance cardiovascular care, and innovate the unique aspects of the cardiology specialty.

COLLEGE OF MEDICINE – JACKSONVILLE

Matthew D. Garber, M.D., F.H.M., FAAP, a professor of pediatrics, has been selected as the Paul V. Miles Fellow in Quality Improvement for 2017 by the American Board of Pediatrics. Garber was chosen for his work on quality for improvement in community-based hospitals, as well as launching and sustaining new pediatric quality improvement programs. The award is given to a mid-career pediatrician dedicated to improving quality of care for children.

COLLEGE OF NURSING

 

Linda Haddad, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, was elected to the NLN Commission on Nursing Education Accreditation Board of Commissions for a three-year term. The commission promotes excellence and integrity in nursing education globally through a rigorous accreditation process. Haddad was recognized for her leadership in curriculum and nursing education.

Michael Weaver, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, has been appointed as the representative from the Populations Science Program to the Scientific Review and Monitoring Committee for the UF Cancer Center and will provide a broad prospective for the range of studies that fall under the auspices of Cancer Population Science.

Stacia Hays, D.N.P., CPNP, CCTC, and Nancy Gill Young, M.S.N., ARNP, CPNP, have both been designated as certified nurse educators. Hays and Young met strict eligibility criteria and successfully passed the National League for Nursing certification exam to qualify for the honor.

COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY

Robert A. Burne, Ph.D., the associate dean for research and chair of the department of oral biology, was elected by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, or AAAS, as a member-at-large in the section on Dentistry and Oral Health Sciences. Burne will serve a four-year term with the AAAS, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing science, engineering and innovation throughout the world.

COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

Rob Huigens, Ph.D.,
an assistant professor of medicinal chemistry, has been selected as the 2016-17 Teacher of the Year, the highest recognition of teaching excellence given within the college. In nomination letters and student evaluations, fellow professors and students noted he demonstrates his love of chemistry through his teaching of the subject matter. He will represent the college at events during the year, including the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy’s annual meeting in Nashville, Tennessee.

National emergency medicine board taps Jacksonville dean

Leon L. Haley Jr., M.D., MHSA, FACEP, C.P.E., dean of the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville, has been named to the board of directors of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Haley will begin his term with the board in July.

The ABEM is one of 24 medical specialty certification boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. ABEM certifies emergency physicians who meet its educational, professional standing and examination standards.

Haley also serves as an oral board examiner for ABEM, and is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He is also a member of the American Association of Physician Leadership, and was a member of the Institute of Medicine Committee on Health and Insurance Status.

Haley came to UF Health Jacksonville in January from Atlanta, where he rose up the ranks as a professor of emergency medicine and an executive associate dean for the Emory University School of Medicine and as a key administrator at Grady Memorial Hospital, the city’s safety net hospital. He also served as chief medical officer of the Emory Medical Care Foundation in Atlanta.
